Fraud in the insurance world at the centre of the fourth meeting of the Cattolica Lecture Days

How to defend oneself from the risk of fraud in the insurance world: this was the focus of the fourth meeting organised by Cattolica Assicurazioni on Friday, 12 October, in the Bisoffi Auditorium, as part of the Cattolica Lecture Days. Alberto Minali, Chief Executive Officer of the Cattolica Group; Angela Barbaglio, Public Prosecutor of the Republic of Verona; Elena Guarino, Deputy Prosecutor of Salerno; Roberto Copia, Manager of the Supervisory Division of IVASS intermediaries; Massimo Treffiletti, ANIA Fraud Prevention Manager; and Maurizio Hazan, Lawyer at the Court of Milan participated in the conference.

The conference was the opportunity to focus on the historical development of the anti-fraud legislation, by defining the so-called “fraudulent behaviours” and concentrating on a series of crimes that affect both private individuals and insurance companies. The IVASS Supervisory Division has determined that the phenomenon of fraud in the insurance field is increasing every year throughout Italy: the most frequent scams occur online and are perpetrated through the use of sites and profiles of intermediaries who offer fake advertisements for the purchase of Auto Liability Insurance, sureties or temporary policies. Those who fall into these traps are, in particular, users searching for low cost products or services attracted by the bargains and young people who, while having expert online media ability, have little experience in insurance policies.

“It is a very sensitive subject for insurance companies - Alberto Minali explained - but our Company, thanks to the use of data banks, is in the forefront of preventing and managing the phenomenon of fraud in the industry”.
